A Brief History of Beverly Hills

When you purchase real estate in Beverly Hills, you become part of a community whose rich history stretches back to the turn of the 20th century. From its beginnings, Beverly Hills was destined to be a luxurious oasis. Influenced by Frederick Law Olmstead, landscape architect Wilbur D. Cook laid out the city with graceful, wide, curving streets that continue to help define the city today. Rodeo, Canon, Carmelita, Elevado and Lomitas have been there since the start in 1907. The community was intended as a place where the elite could come and build the custom homes of their dreams.

Of course, Beverly Hills' glamour era began with the construction of the Beverly Hills Hotel in 1912. Stars and celebrities began to flock to the new community, drawn to the elegant lifestyle represented by the hotel. Some of the city’s first resident first stars included Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, John Barrymore and Will Rogers. Though Los Angeles threatened to swallow the city in the '20s, prominent residents rallied to preserve their community's unique identity and lifestyle.

After World War II, the prestige of Beverly Hills as the most glamorous place to live in the world continued to grow. Rodeo Drive added to the town's attractions, its luxury shopping experience attracting visitors from all over the globe. Stars continued to flock to the city. Past and present celebrities who have owned Beverly Hills real estate include Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Doris Day, Walt Disney, Harrison Ford, Madonna, Steve Martin and Bruce Springsteen.
